Where to stay

Where to stay in Bali as a solo woman

7 min read · By your Bali sister

Canggu, Ubud, or Seminyak? An honest comparison of Bali's three most popular areas, who each one suits, and where you will feel most at home travelling alone.

Where you base yourself shapes your entire Bali trip, so it is worth getting right. Canggu, Ubud, and Seminyak are the three areas most solo women ask about, and each one attracts a slightly different traveler. Here is the honest comparison, including who each suits and where you will feel most at home on your own.

Canggu: social, surfy, and full of solo travelers

Canggu is the hub for younger solo travelers, digital nomads, and anyone who wants to make friends fast. It is packed with cafes, co-working spots, surf breaks, and beach clubs, which makes it almost effortless to meet people. The trade-offs are traffic and a fair bit of scooter chaos.

Best for: first-time solo women who want a social scene, surfing, and easy ways to meet other travelers.

Ubud: calm, green, and wellness-focused

Ubud sits inland among rice terraces and jungle. It is the heart of Bali's yoga and wellness world, quieter and more spiritual, and many women find it the easiest place to feel at peace travelling alone. Evenings are gentle rather than party-focused.

Best for: women who want calm, nature, yoga and wellness, and a slower pace.

Seminyak: polished, stylish, and easy

Seminyak is Bali's more upscale beach town: good restaurants, boutiques, stylish beach clubs, and lovely sunsets, with infrastructure that feels a little more put-together than Canggu. It is comfortable and easy for a solo woman who wants a touch of comfort.

Best for: women who want beaches, nice dinners, shopping, and an easygoing, more refined vibe.

There is no single "safest" area. All three are popular and safe for solo women. The real question is which trip you want, calm, social, or stylish.

Two more worth knowing

How to choose where to stay within an area

Wherever you land, a few things make a solo woman's stay feel safer and nicer: read recent reviews from other women, pick somewhere with 24-hour reception or a responsive host, choose a central spot so you are not isolated late at night, and message the host before you book to see how quickly and warmly they reply.

Not sure which fits you?

This is one of the most common questions women ask me, and the honest answer depends on the trip you are dreaming of. If you tell me a little about what you are hoping for, I will point you to the right area and even the right neighborhood within it. That is part of what a Bali Sister does.
